How to Disable Access to your Pendrive in your PC

Recently one of my readers asked me how to disable USB storage devices on computers. Now I am going to explain how you can enable your USB drive to reject detecting any pendrive. This trick comes handy if you own a cyber café and your computers are prone of virus infected USB drives.

To disable the access to USB port, in windows Vista / XP follow the steps below

  • Goto Start and click on Run and type Regedit, and then click OK.
  • In the registry menu Locate and then click the following registry key:
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesUsbStor
  • In the right hand pane double-click Start as shown in the image below.
  • In the Value data box, type 4 and then click OK.
  • Quit Registry Editor and refresh your desktop.

You can re-enable your USB port to accept pen drive by following the same procedure and changing the value to 3.

This is an excellent solution for IT administrators who want to prevent USB access in their computer labs to minimize infection from a computer virus carried on the flash, perhaps even one that uses autorun to infect automatically without the user knowing. So this will prove to be a very useful solution for many who are heavily involved with tech.
